YOUTH SHARES LEAD IN CONTEST AFTER DISPLAY OF HONESTY
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. There was a slight chance In a reading-at-sight piano contest in Auckland for any entrants who may previously have seen themusic. Even so they could keep quiet—unless they were truly honest like a boy at the Auckland competitions festival yesterday. . . He was Ashley Lawrence, an Auckland competitor in the 12-16 years class, piano solo, with 38 entrants. The judge, Miss Dorothy Davies, selected an unfamiliar piece which each entrant had to play after a brief looic at the sheet. When Ashley's turn came he sat at the piano, looked at the music, arose and said: “I'm sorry, but I’ve seen this before.” „ , ~, , Another score was found- Ashley played last —and was placed first equal.
