Africans' Guns Blaze in White Queen Feud
CAPE TOWN, Sept. 2.
The first shots were fired today in (he dispute among Bechuanaland's Bamangwato ‘tribesmen over their white cx-tvpist Queen. Ruth Williams. Gunmen attacked a wealthy backer of Ruth’s husband in their friend's home in Serowe. They fired a burst of shots through his window and escaped in a maze of huts. The friend. Phelu. was unhurt. It is known that Phetu paid Ruth’s fare from London to Bechuanaland and bought a new car that and her husband, Seretse, are now using.
At the moment the Bamangwato tribe's administration is almost at a standstill. Tribesmen have called a tax strike. Those who support t lie chiefdesignate. Seretse Khama, refuse to pay in case their money goes to the Regent in exile, Tshekcdi, who appointed the tax gatherers.
Tshekedi’s supporters are holding back lest their payments help Seretse. In addition, the tribe’s assets have been frozen pending the issue of findings of a iudicial commission shortly to consider the question of chieftainship.
