MISS PENELOPE DOLL VALUED AS FAMILY POSSESSION
The period doll, Miss Penelope, which was on exhibition at the Gisborne Home Guard Band curio and art exhibition last week, is believed to be the first Dutch doll to be brought into England from Holland.
Dressed in the clothes of the period 1665-1714 which it wore when brought over to England by a Lady-in-Waiting at the Court of James 11, the doll is said to have attracted the great interest of Queen Anne.
A great grandson of the original owner, the Lady-in-Waiting, came to New Zealand during the Maori wars as a member of the staff of General Cameron. When hostilities ceased, the soldier settled in the Waikato and the doll came out to the Dominion with his belongings, It has now passed on to the head of that particular family its present owner. The British Museum has expressed a desire to add Miss Penelope to its collection of period dolls
