A DAY OF GOOD DIVIDENDS: CUP TO WONDER BOY

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 5. The weather was perfect lor the first day of the Avondale Jockey Clubs spring meeting on Saturday. The track was dead- The totalisator handled £153,593, compared with £111,728 on the first day last year, an increase of £41.805.

There were several good dividends, Montello d'Oro, winner of the September Hurdles, paying almost a a century, while Silvette, Martial Song, Dixie and Bustany all paid double figures for a win. Bridge Watcher and Tin Musk paid double figures for a place.

Ancient Knight, Brer Acre, and El Salto fell in the Henderson Handicap and their riders, E. Spriggs, P. Cathro and D. J. Wyatt, were taken to hospital for observation. Wyatt had to receive a number of stitches and will be unable to ride for a few weeks. All three were later discharged. J. Mitchell, rider of Battling Brave, and J- Merrilces, rider of Sir Teddy, who fell in the September Hurdles, were also taken to hospital for observation and later discharged. ' An inquiry into the fall of the three horses in the Henderson Handicap was opened and adjourned until next Saturday.
