CANTERBURY LEAD AUCKLAND IN N.Z. COURT TOURNEY

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Aug. 27. Canterbury still hold the leading position in the first-grade competition at the Dominion women's basketball tournament, which was continued yesterday.

With six wins to its credit the Canterbury team has scored 12 points while Auckland team has won five matches and drawn one, placing them one point behind Canterbury.

Auckland and Canterbury will play off for the New Zealand Cup today, and as two points are allotted for a win and one point for a draw Auckland must defeat Canterbury to win the trophy.

Taranaki and Waikato each have 16 points and two matches to play in the second-grade competition, while Tauranga has 15 points and three matches to play. Marlborough in the thirdgrade competition shares with Canterbury the distinction of being unbeaten after three days’ play in the tournament. They have 18 match points and two games to play, while North Otago is in second place with 15 points and two matches to play. Yesterday’s results were:—

Miss Shirley McAneney, chosen to represent the South Island, is a Gisborne student at Otago University. She is a member of a family prominent in Rugby and other amateur sport over a number of years, and prior to proceeding to Dunedin for university training was head girl at the Gisborne High School, where she led the basketball team and won allround athletic honours.
