The number of women alcoholics and habitual drunkards in the United States had increased to an all-time high of 800,000/ the vice-president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, Miss Mary Ervin, told the organisation’s executive committee at the annual meeting. , She said the number rose to 120.000 in the past year. Government reports showed that one of every four of the 37.303 alcoholics admitted to institutions last year were women. She listed as reasons for increasing drinking by women liquor advertising that depicted drinking by women as socially' smart and glamorous, congestion of taverns and liquor stores on residential shopping streets, alcoholic beverage departments in grocery and drug stores, and home bar-rooms.
