N.Z. COMPANY GETS AUSTRALIAN CONTRACT
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. A colony of 52 New Zealanders will be established in a former prisoner-of-war camp at Murchison, Victoria, Australia, in November when Earthworks, Limited, a Palmerston North company, starts work on the construction of the Wairanga irrigation canal. The company has been the successful tenderer for the construction of an eight-mile long channel which will open a large fruit-growing area. There will be no Australians on the job.
All the engineers and labourers will be taken from New Zealand, with bulldozers, caterpillar tractors and other equipment.
The canal will go from the Goulbourn weir to the Wairanga reservoir, in the Shepperton district. Ninetyseven miles from Melbourne. Shepperton is the centre of a flourishing stone fruit-growing area.
