HUGE BUILDING TASK FACES HIGHWAYS BOARD
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 13. The huge bridging programme facing the Main Highways Board and the steps to be taken were outlined by the Minister of Works, Mr. R. Semple. Bridges estimated to cost at least £5.000.000 should be built within a reasonable period, he said. A three-year programme of urgent and immediate work covered the building of 250 bridges at an estimated cost of £2,000.000, the Minister said. Few highway bridges were built during the war and the shortage of materials had been serious since then. The position had been made more acute by the tremendous increase in heavy road transport. This traffic had also increased materially in weight.
“The Main Highways Board has been putting at least £500,000 a year on its estimates for bridging work,” said Mr, Semple. “Because of the shortage of skilled manpower for country work of this kind, however, and the difficult position with materials, especially cement and steel, it has not been found possible so far to carry out fully even this fairly modest programme.
