GOOD FORM SHOWN IN WEEK-END PLAY: KOHN-HARRIS WIN

GOLF

Improving conditions on the Awapuni course, where the recent rains have had a salutory effect upon the fairways and greens, are contributing to better performances in competition play. On Saturday a four-ball best-ball bogey competition produced some excellent cards, with W. Kohn and G. Harris topping the list, 11 up on bogey.

Several pairs were well ahead of “the Colonel,” C. J. Smith and T. Te Kanawa taking second place to Kohn and Harris with six up, on the countback from J. B. Jefferd and R. Smailb also six up. G. H. Stewart and H. N. Early finished five up, and P. L. Singer and W. Langlands duplicated their performance. Other good cards were those of J- S. Barns-Graham and I. L. Boagey, four up; E. J. Watts and R. Watchman, four up; D. Watts and W. Mason, three up; B. Kahlenberg and V. Ivess, three up; and I. D. Bramwell and J. Fitzmaurice, three up.

In a Stableford bogey competition G. H. Stewart (handicap 4) was the winner with a score of 37 points; C. J. Smith (18) taking second place with 36pts., and other leading scores being those of J. Coutts (10) and A. BarnsGraham (6) 34pts.: N. H. Bull (9a M. R. Maude (7), A. K. Russell (13), and G. Burland (24), 33pts.; I. D. Bramwell (4), J. T. Dodgshun (3), and B. Jenkins (5), 3’2pts.

The short sixth produced another hole-in-one, credited to G. H. Stewart. This hole is a difficult one for all but the expert players, and even they regard it as a green-keeper’s joke. It requires nice judgment to drop a ball from the tee within one putt of the pin, which is closely protected by bunkers. Nevertheless, it is the most prolific of one-shot performances, rare as they are on the ’Awapuni links

Racing attractions will be taken into account this week, and the May tankard has been set out for the week-end.
