PETROL RATIONING MAY END IN AUSTRALIA
(10 a.m.) CANBERRA. May 21. The abolition of petrol rationing in New Zealand would almost certainly result in a similar move in Australia, said official sources yesterday. Informed sources suggest that if the British Government decides it can no longer ask New Zealand to retain the rationing the same attitude will be adopted towards Australia. The Federal Government is anxious to get rid of petrol rationing because it is embarrassing politically. The leader of the Country Party, Mr. A. W. Fadden. who claims there are ample supplies of sterling petrol available to lift rationing, has been involved for some time in a controversy with the Minister of Supply, Senator W. P. Ashley. The Federal Government says that the retention of rationing is in conformity with the wish of the British Government and that it assists Britain at a time of financial difficulty.
