CREW ABANDONS STRICKEN SHIP

SYDNEY, May 20. After spending the night aboard the collier Munmorah, which is now breaking up on a reef at Bellambi Point. 40 miles south of Sydney, members of the crew have abandoned the ship. Captain K. Knutsen, two officers and a marine surveyor, stayed aboard for some hours after others, but were then taken off by launch. Little hope is now held of salvaging the vessel which is taking in water through gaping holes in the hull. The plight of the crew became serious last night as big seas, whipped by a southerly wind, caused the Munmorah to list 30 degrees. Because of the difficulty of operating small boats in the darkness in the reef-strewn waters, it was decided to stay aboard until daybreak. In a heavy surf they were taken off with some belongings by fishermen in a small launch.
