Unlike the position with regard to matches, which is acute in Gisborne, aa in other centres, popular brands of cigarettes can be obtained fairly easily by regular customers of the town’s retailers —perhaps not in the supply that smokers would like, but in sufficient quantities to enable almost every smoker to indulge. Though there has not been an importation of cigarettes from overseas for about 12 months, these lines are still plentiful, but are showing signs of diminishing from the market. No licenses are being Issued for cigarette importation, and consequently much depends on the New Zealand product Staff in tobacco, factories is a problem, and the termination of this difficulty would place cigarette and tobacco production on a higher level. “There is no cause for alarm concerning cigarettes,’’ stated a Gisborne wholesaler yesterday when it was suggested to him that there might be a shortage of cigarettes in the town. The question of sufficient staff in the factories was one of the chief difficulties, he said. i Cigarette tobacco is getting more plentiful, and the demand for pipe tobacco can almost be met.
