EVEN, IF NOT STRONG, FIELDS SHOULD PROVIDE GOOD RACING AT GISBORNE

(Herald Special Service.)

THERE is every indication that tomorrow will see one of the best winter race meetings for some seasons held by the P.B. Turf Club.

The response from owners and trainers exceeded expectations. The Makaraka course, after this week’s fine weather, should be in excellent condition.

Although there is nothing outstanding in any of the eight events, the class of horse is of such an even nature that the racing cannot help but be well worth seeing.

WAINUI HURDLES Omaio (12), 10.9, is fit and experienced, but 10.9 will prove a test to this smallish gelding. French Count . (2), 10.3, fimks as well as ever he has done and is going to prove a difficult one to keep out of a place. Lord Latour (6), 9.5, is having his first run over hurdles, but has done a fair amount of schooling, and seems a likely sort- On the score of weight, he has been taken a risk with. Astrophe (3), 9.0, should be all the better for the racing he had at Hastings last month and now back on his own track is not without possibilities. Gentleman Joe (10), 9.0, is going to be a problem. There is no denying his chances, and perhaps that one-time successful combination FitzgeraldNicholson —will score at its reassembling. •Big Wonder (13), 9.0, on what he showed in the Hack Hurdles at Hastings has the “bolter’s” show. Cherry Hunter (9), 9.0, bred and trained in Gisborne, is back where he started from. His hurdle form of recent date is not illuminating. Little Duke (5), 9.0, has no form. Master Gary (11), 9.0, might spi'ing a surprise. He has the right conditionFarrier (4), 9.0, is the “dark horse” of this lot —beware —but hardly has the form. Quination (1), 9.0, has no form. Sterling Gold (8), 9.0, has only a very rough show. WAIPAOA HACK HANDICAP Robert Keith (12), 9.0, should have improved with his one run at Hastings and may be a favourite. Gold Circuit (9), 8.11, raced poorly at the autumn season and unless she has recuperated somewhat is not a strong hope. Johannes (2), 8.8, has no recent form, but jias won this season so enters the list of possibilities. Grand Dame (13). 8.8, won really convincingly last month so n\ay be one of the best backed division. Running Rein (8), 8.4, at very best is only a moderate. Pirelio (17), 8.3, is up lo average country form, but has her work in front of her after drawing, so wide out.

Motoka (11), 8.2, failed in recent starts, but this time last season struck his best form so may be a winter bloom.

Lady Christopher (14), 8.0, a win and a fourtlj in 11 starts—that iS her score this season.

Tucker Box (7), may be all the better for a race. Adonis (5), 7.13, has no form Jcvial Lad (4), 7.13, has no form. Gold Frock (3), 7.13, has had seven “also rans” this season. Lady Josephine (16), 7.13, is not fancied, even for a place. Leighwin (15). 7.13, early this season won a maiden and was also twice placed, but of late has disappointed. Master Modereen (1), 7.13, has no place form. Theatre Lane. (10) , 7.13, has no place form.

Young Parke (0), 7.13, is having his

first race this season, but when tried previously showed a little promise. MAIDEN STAKES NO. 1

Miss Vanity (12), 8.10, first race. Else May (1), 8.10, first start. Master Moderecn (11), 8.10, has no place form. Theatre Lane (7), 8.10, third last start at Te Aroha so is not without a very fair show. Tweeds Only (4), 8.1, is not denied a place show. Gambari (6), 8.10, was third at Hastings, returning the largest place dividend ever on that track. Was it a fluke?

Sunny Spur (14), 8.10, was fourth in her last two starts.

Lady .Josephine (5),' 8.10, has no place formRoyal Society (3), 8.10, has started twice, but failed on each occasion. Brown Boy (2), 8.10, in his one start did not weigh-in. Couscttc (9), 8.10, was twice defeated in as many starts. Slippery Sam (8), 8.0, has no place form.

Tillie Leighon (13). 8.0, first start. Golden Rye (10), 8.0, in his two efforts to date was out of a place both times, but was in the call at one stage at Hastings. He may have improved enough to give him a place show. PUBLICANS’ HACK PURSE Run Bahadur (10). 9.0, raced below expectations at Hastings, with a third his best, but his middle-distance form should see him in a place at leastAratucky (12), 8.6, ran well enough last time on Makaraka to suggest it being a possibility. Phanion (1), 8.6. minus a 51b apprentice allowance, should be one of the favourites. High Profit (5), 8.2, ran one good and one bad race at Hastings; is not discarded. Kuku-Nui (7), 8.0, won last season, but has not raced since early this spring, when in two starts it ran fourth in one. Rhodesian Gold (4), 7.13, has only a rough place chance. Little Tich (2), 7.12, is starting in the last event.

Coast Patrol (11), 7.11, is not fancied.

Gyros (8). 7-11, has not been seen for a long time. Hineuai (9), 7.11, has been disappointing. Robbie Burns (3), 7.11, has no form. Tyrone Lass (6), 7.11, makes up this field.

★GISBORNE STEEPLECHASE

STRONG THREAD (10), 9.10, broke down again at Hastings so is a dubious one to criticise as he might not complete the course. A couple of years back showed very fair form. ALLISLOPER (11). 9.9, on last year’s form looks as good an idea here as any.

MAGNUS LUX (9), 9.7, has the condition. He should be in the money. WAIWAINUI (1), 9.4, is a good jumper, but absence of form this last 12 months is not a factor in his favour.
