WOMEN CHAMPIONS WIN NARROWLY IN RUATORIA HOCKEY

(Herald Correspondent.) Five teams of women and five of men players are this season appearing in the respective competitions of the Ruatoria Hockey sub-association. Hikurangi fielded a new, side this year. Hikurangi, last year’s winners in the women’s division, defeated .Te Aowera last week by one goal to nil. The goal was scored by Mrs. H. Haua from a movement in which N. Ngarimu, EParker, and F. Haua took part. Te Aowera were unfortunate with infringements, the centre, R. Tuhura, netting three goals, but all being disallowed. Mrs. Hiroki, ‘ the full-back, played a sound game. Mrs. W. Beach, right wing for United was successful with three goals, while Porourangi were unable to pierce the defence. On the left wing, Mrs. Nepe missed some seemingly easy shots. S. Johnson, and Mrs. Mako were also sound in United’s ranks, with W. Rangi, Mrs. Tuhaka, and B. Brown most enterprising in the Porourangi team. Men’s Division In the men’s division, United and Porourangi played a fast game, both sides missing narrowly, but neither •> ing able to score. For United, I. Thomas, on the left wing, was outstanding, and Russell, another newcomer to United ranks, gave a convincing display at full-back. J. Tuhou (goalie) and K. Tuhou (centre) were also sound. G. Haerewa overshadowed his opposite, with T. Tuhaka and r. Te Maro making up the best trio for Porourangi. , . , „ Te Aowera defeated Hikurangi by 3 goals to 1. Te Aowera led 2-ml till shortly before time when S. Haua went through in a solo effort for Hikurangi. Hiroki scored again immediately from the bully-off. The other scorer was DTuhura. Ousstanding players were M. Tuhura, full-back, and T. SherwOod, centre, for Te Aowera and Hikurangi respectively.
