Red Bid To Seal Off Shanghai From Sea Repulsed
(11 a.m.) SHANGHAI', May 6. The first Communist attempt to seal off Shanghai from the Yangtse and its sea outlet has failed.
In 100 small boats they attempted to land near the mouth of the Whangpoo River at the town of Liu Ho on the Yangtse, 30 miles west of the powerful fortifications at Woosung which guard Shanghai’s exit to the sea. A Nationalist announcement says that the defenders drove off the landing attempt with heavy artillery fire, sinking 10 boats. The rest fled to the north.
The British United Press correspondent says the Nationalist authorities are taking precautions against a stab in the back when the Communists launch their frontal attack. Four ringleaders of the alleged Communist fifth column have been executed and another 500 are under arrest on charges of sabotage.
