Aviation Expansion. The remarkable growth of civil aviation in New Zealand since the war is shown by statistics of air services, excluding aero club operations, which have been compiled by the Census of Statistics Department and published in the last Abstract of Statistics. During 1948 3,556,000 miles were flown, a considerable increase on the 1,895,000 in 1947, 1,133,000 the previous year, and 994,000 in 1945. The number of passengers carried has increased from 52,400 in 1945 to 157,500 last year, and freight ton miles from 10,800 in 1945 to 574.900 last year. In overseas services New Zealand aircraft flew 2,384,000 miles last year, compared with 1,322.000 in 1947 and 494,000 in 1946. The number of passengers carried on these services increased from 6100 in 1946 to 13,400 in 1947 and 23,000 last year.
