MAN FINED FOR EVASION OF TAX

(P.A.) GREYMOUTH, April 6. Pleading guilty to six charges of wilfully making false returns under the Land and Income Tax Act in the past six years, George Alfred Webster, aged 72, retired umbrella maker, was fined £5 on each charge by Mr. F. F. Reid, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today. It was stated by counsel for the Commissioner of Taxes that the false returns represented a total deficiency in tax of £6Bl.

The magistrate said in respect of one or two years the amounts were substantial and he found difficulty in understanding how anyone could have misunderstood the position. However, in view of counsel’s remarks, the magistrate said he thought it fair to accept the case as one of an uneducated man not familiar with such things as tax returns.
