INQUIRY EASES AND RATES FALL FOR FEMALE CATTLE
MATAWHERO FAIR
Female cattle offered at the second and final day of tne April cattle fair at Matawhero were neglected by buyers yesterday and there was a marked decline in all values with the exception of top lines of heavy,cows. The Waikato was the only outside district operating and the local demand was erratic.
The quality was good in parts, but erratic. The bulk of the small entry was broken down into small offerings with no large straignt station lots. The lighter class of cows were down by ill per head on recent sales; good, heavy and forward sorts were within 5s of their value; two and a-half year heifers were holding their own to 10s down and eighteen-month heifers 15s to £1 down.
Empty cows in good forward order made illo to £lO 11s. medium £9 to £9 18s and lighter £8 to £3 11s. Cows in calf made from £8 15s to £ll Is. A few small three and a-half year heifers sold at £lO Gs and empty two and a-half year heifers £lO 10s to £ll 16s for those in forward order and from £8 Gs to £lO 5s for small to medium sorts. In-calf heifers made to £l2 for an advertised line from Poututu station. Choice younger heifers were making from £8 to £8 15s. medium from £7 10s to £7 17s 6d and small and light from £5 15s to £G 19s.

Davis est., £9 8s; 29, P.A., fresh condition, on account of Mr. P. W. Mossman, Tiniroto, £9 17s: 31, P.A., m.a., breeding and condition, on account of Mr. T. G. Seymour. Waimata, £lO 10s; 15, P.A., medium condition. £9 11s; 17. Herefords, on account of Mr. S. R. Murphy, Muriwai, £9; smaller pens, £8 7s to £lO 11s. the latter being paid for speyed cows from Tauwhareparae.
In-Calf Cows. —Seventeen, Herefords, on account of Marangi station, £ll Is; 18 Herefords. light, from Matawai, £7 15s: 16. P.A., light order, from Rakauroa. £6 15s; 10, Herefords, on account of Mangarangi station, £8 3s.
Two and a-half year Heifers. —Forty, Herefords. b.w.b.. advertised line on account of Poututu station, £l2; 21, Herefords, on account of Mr. D. C. Black, back Hangaroa, £11; 17, Herefords, medium. £lO ss; 19, P.A., on account of Mr. P. W. Mossman, Waerenga-o-kuri, £9 14s; 18, P.A.. with size and condition, on account of Tangihanga station, £ll 16s: 20. Herefords, second cut, on account of Mr. D. C. Black, £9.
Eighteen-month Heifers. Twentytwo, P.A.. medium, £7 11s: 32, Herefords, on account of Patumaru station. £8; 17, P.A., well grown, from back of Tokomaru Bay, £8 2s Gd; 14, Hereford-Short-horn cross, on account of Messrs. Murphy Brothers. Muriwai, £7 2s Gd; 31. P.A.. on account of Hander est.. £6 10s; smaller lines from £5 15s to £7 17s Gd.
The beef section was not strong in numbers. Heavy young cows were making £l3 7s Gd to £l3 15s and smaller and medium sorts from £ll 2s Gd to £l2 10s. Heifers made from £l2 Gs to £l3 10s and vealers from £5 Is to £7 7s.
