HOCKEY PLAYERS HAVE HOPES FOR GOOD SEASON
WAIROA NEWS
(Herald Correspondent.) There was a satisfactory attendance at the annual meeting of the Wairoa Hockey Association. Mr. R. A. Y. Teague presided. It was reported that the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, had given an assurance that houses would not be built on an area so long as it was required for sport. The piece of land is known as the Hunter Brown estate, which, it is claimed, would be an ideal site for the playing of hockey, the association in the past having difficulty in securing a suitable area. It was announced that should the land be purchased by the association £250 had been guaranteed as loan money.
The balance sheet showed a very satisfactory state of affairs. The coming season promises to be most successful. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Harker were elected patron and patroness, and Mr. J. A. Dudley, sen., chairman of the management committee. A strong committee was also set up with Mrs. J. McGregor again acting as secretary.
At a recent gathering of members of the Wairoa Women’s Institute Mesdames F. J .Hilland and H. E. Yates, who are shortly leaving the district, were farewelled. Each was the recipient of a suitable gift. At the annual meeting of the Kaitawa branch of the New Zealand Labour Party the following officers were elected:—President, Mr. B. Wairoa; vice-president, Mr. C. Geti: secretary, Mr. H. Clarke; executive, Mesdames Gallagher, Ottaway, .O’Hara, jun., Rangi, Gillespie, Walters, Messrs. McNellis, Mann. Sefton, Green, Tuahine, Meads, Schepens and Ross.
