AUSTRALIANS CAN GO TO JAPAN TO MARRY
(11.15 a.m.) CANBERRA, Mar. 9. The Minister of Immigration, Mr. A. A. Calwell, said he had no objection to issuing a passport to anyone who wanted to return to Japan to marry a Japanese girl but that whether a person could return rested finally with the Supreme Commander, General MacArthur, who controlled all entries into Japan. Replying to questions in the House of Representatives, Mr. Calwell said he had received a letter from a soldier saying that he wanted to go back to Japan to become a Japanese citizen. An Army spokesman said there were no legal marriages between Australians'and Japanese in Japan because no marriage could be solemnised without permission of the Supreme Commander who had not approved of any Shinto marriages.
