Food Poisoning Cases Making Good Recovery
(S.R.) WAIROA, Mar. 9. A Press Association message yesterday made it appear that there had been 11 cases of food poisoning at the Wairoa Hospital. This is incorrect as the outbreak occurred in the maternity annex where no fewer than 12 persons became suddenly ill after taking a portion of the midday meal. So serious did they become that it was found necessary to remove the whole party of patients and nurses byambulance to hospital. One person has been discharged and the other 11 are progressing satisfactorily. At first it was thought that the complaint was caused by including duck eggs in the making of meringues but this is now disproved. It is believed that the cause of the illness was germs either taken to the annex by a carrier from flies or from food already in the annex which had been contaminated.
Every precaution has been taken by the Health Department to prevent the spread of the complaint and it is understood that those in charge of the investigations are very hopeful of ascertaining how the complaint originally started.
