WORKERS CEASE LOADING OF TWO FOOD SHIPS IN AUCKLAND
CARPENTERS’ DISPUTE
(p A j AUCKLAND, March 9. The latest development in the industrial dispute is that no produce will be loaded today into two food ships in port that have not yet taken their full cargoes for the United Kingdom.
This follows the boycott im-* posed by watersiders, drivers and railway -workers against the 1 Auckland Farmers Freezing Company because it would not under- ! take to employ dismissed carpenters.
All butter and cheese exported from Auckland is handled by the company. The loading of produce from the company's cool stores ceased at the port at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon but the ban on deliveries to the stores will not be enforced until Thursday. Work by watersiders on the steamer Northumberland has ceased. One hundred watersiders declined to work on her yesterday. This follows the dismissal on Monday of 15 men who refused to unload from No. 6 hatch soda ash for the Penrose glassworks. The port committee suggested that all cargo from the hatch be discharged and the soda ash isolated in a wharf shed. The men did not accept the proposal. The Waterfront Industry Commission in Auckland is discussing the situation today. , . T!*r policy on the handling of dairy produce on the waterfront is still not clarified.
