TAXI LICENSES FOR EX-SERVICEMEN
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 7. Until one of the Wellington Metropolitan Licensing Authority’s decisions is upset on an appeal the authority will continue to adopt the policy of refusing applications for. the transfer of taxi licenses to other than returned servicemen.
The authority refused two such actions today. The chairman, Mr. D. McGrath, pointing out that two of the three witnesses called by the Rehabilitation Department had given up taxi businesses immediately before entering the forces.
For the Transport Department, Mr. J. C. Cameron said there were 21 applicants for new taxi licenses and the authority had decided to grant 20 licenses but had been restrained by an injunction in the Supreme Court. Seventyeight of the applicants were returned servicemen.
