SECOND DAY OF HOROUTA TOURNEY

COAST TENNIS

(Herald Correspondent.)

A large and appreciative crowd witnessed the second day’s play in the Horouti tournament conducted under tiie auspices of the Horouta Lawn Tennis Sub-Association at Whakarua Park, Ruatoria.

Practically all the senior events were carried to the semi finals, and three of the four junior finals were played. The standard of play was generally higher than on the opening day. As expected, the Arawa juniors were too strong for the Gisborne and East Coast representatives, winning and being runners-up in all the singles and doubles. Arawa thus have a clear 32 points lead for the Ngarimu Memorial Cup, which goes to the tribe gaming the* most points. This block of junior points practically gives Arawa the Ngarimu Cup, as the senior placings are very evenly divided. Titirangi, representing the Maoris of (he Gisborne area, lost all hopes of a win when Mrs. FI. Ngata was forced to default in the semi-finals of the singles and the quarter finals of the women’s doubles, while H. Ngata and P. Smiler lost to W. Taare and R. Kerr in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles. M Apanui, representing Whakatohea (Opotiki) lost a gallant fight to W. Taare, so that, excepting the combined doubles, all the semi-finals and final placings are occupied by representatives of the Arawa and Horouta.
