MAN DROWNED WHEN GOLD DREDGE SINKS
(P.A.) GREYMOUTH, Mar. 7. A serious accident occurred on Saturday afternoon to the Arahura River dredge which was working about four miles upstream against a fairly high bank on the northern side.
The dredge was suddenly tilted backwards and sidewards when the buckets made impact with the face The elevator structure was smashed and the pontoon was flooded, allowing the crew of five on day shift less than half a minute to get ashore. One member, however, who was in the engine room, was unable to get clear and was drowned. He was Mr. Frederick Tuliuru, aged 27, single, of the Arahura Maori pa. The body has not yet been recovered as the dredge sank in 16ft. of waterThe indications are that repairs to the dredge will be very extensive and that its work will be held up for a considerable time.
