Good Play On First Day Of Horouta Tourney

COAST TENNIS

(Herald Correspondent.) Though heavy rain fell on Friday and Saturday morning was overcast and threatening, preparations went ahead in Ruatoria for the billeting of the travelling team, and the courts were ready for use on time for the Horouta tournament.

The junior section of the tournament was played on the Manutahi District High School’s ashphalt courts’ simultaneously with the senior play at Whakarua Park.

The play in the men and boys’ sections particularly was of a very good standard, though none of the seeded players. B. Morrison. W. Taare. Miss L. Karauti and Miss Davis, were noticeably extended. Apart from the trophies for each championship event, the Ngarimu Memorial Cup is the most coveted prize and is to be presented to the tribe gaining the most points. The tournament has progressed sufficiently far to, forecast that the «ery strong Arawa team (Rotorua) and the Horouta (East Coast) will play out a very close finish, the Arawa junior section being exceptionally strong. Except for M. Waititi losing his combined doubles to H. Ngata, and the latter losing his singles to W. Taare, there were no major upsets. The tournament committee is to be congratulated on the very efficient manner in which it has performed its duties, the loud-speaker system contributing to the smooth running off of the sections.
