BETTER TEETH THROUGH WATER SUPPLY
Dental experts are examining a plan to give, the people of Sydney better teeth—-through the water tap. They say it may take 20 years. The experts represent the Faculty of Dentistry at Sydney University, the Institute for Dental Research, and the New South Wales branch of the Australian Dental Association.
They are preparing a report on the possibilities of adding sodium fluoride to the city’s water supply. The secretary of the New South Wales branch of the Dental Association, Mr. Robert Harris, explains:— “The addition of sodium fluoride to community drinking water —not more than two parts to a million parts of watei —has been tried with successoverseas.
“The cost of sodium fluoride is infinitesimal. and it nas no recognisable taste. “Adults won’t benefit, because the effect on adult teeth is almost negligible. “But in children it alteis the chemical structure of tooth enameh and may bring 40 per cent, improvement.”
