Protests By Critical Newspapers Overridden
(10 a.m.) BUENOS AIRES, Mar. 6. The Argentine Government today overrode the protests of two large independent newspapers, La Prensa and La Nacion, and announced that it would seize and control the distribution of all newsprint in the country. The Government rejected the suggestion of La Prensa and La Nacion that newsprint be allocated to papers on a pro rata basis with each paper determining how to use its quota.
The Government said it would enforce the order limiting the number of pages any newspaper might publish.
La Prensa and La Nacion have criticised the President, General Peron, from time to time. La Prensa expressed the fear that Government control would threaten the freedom and even the existence of the press in Argentina. The Finance Minister, Senor Ramon Cereija, replied: “We want to maintain the freedom of the press, but we find that while some newspapers have paper others have not.
He said the order was based on the principle that all should share the available stocks or none should receive any. He said that La Prensa and La Nacion owned large newsprint stocks.
