REVERSES ON FIRST INNINGS SUFFERED BY TOP ELEVENS IN SENIOR A SERIES

The leading’ Senior A elevens, Rugby Old Boys and Marist, suffered reverses on the first innings at the hands of H.S-0.8. and United respectively in the club games of the P.B. Cricket Association completed on the Gisborne grounds on Saturday, Though championship positions were not altered margins were reduced and with two series remaining to complete the competition only 10 points separate the top and bottom teams.

In the first round R. 0.8. collected 10 points at the expense of H-5.0.8., while Marist took the decision on the first innings against United. The corresponding games of the second round were drawn, rain preventing play on the scheduled second day. Retired With Score of 102

On the fast wickets which again favoured free scoring the outstanding individual performance was that of a Senior B batsman, P. Richardson, of the Rugby Old Boys (A) team, who retired on reaching 102 runs in the match with H-5.0.8., leading team in the division. Another R. 0.8. (A) player, T. Kelly, was dismissed when one short of th_e half-century and the team total, 275. was only 13 short of the top innings of the season in the division, the 288 scored by R. 0.8. (B) against United in the third series of the first roundAn excellent bowling double was achieved in a second Grade match by H. Barbour. Playing for R. 0.8. (A) in this competition he took eight wickets for 17 runs in each of the two innings of the High School (B) team. In the previous week Barbour recorded 8-14 and 7-33 when bowling against High School (A) in the Second Grade series. Strong Marist Opening In the Senior A match on the Oval No. 1 wicket the Marist batsmen carried their tally to 185, but were still over 50 runs short of the United opening of the previous week- R. F. Conole was top scorer for Marist with 39. The other opener, J. Roche, contributed 29 and the score was 59 before the partnership was broken.

Each of the five United bowlers gained one wicket or more, S. C. Calcott being the most successful. United played out time which came with their second innings tally at 87 for three wickets, J. Thompson making 31. Conole, who bowled only two overs, took ttfo of the wickets for seven runs. Improved H-5.0.8. Attack

The improved H. 5.0.8. attack on No, 2 wicket kept the Rugby Old Boys Senior A score to comparatively moderate dimensions, the last wicket falling with the board showing 146 in reply to the H. 5.0.8. first strike of 214 of the previous week.

D. A. Wells with six wickets for 42 runs off 21 overs in the R. 0.8. first innings and three for 41 off six overs in the second, was the top bowler of the game, though the most successful R. 0.8. exponent, H. E. Tapping, took three for eight off three overs in the H-5.0.8. second strike which was declared at 122 for 5. When stumps wer drawn the R. 0.8. second innings score \vas 97 for six. The most consistent H. 5.0.8. batsman was L- Roderick with 54 and 48 in the respective innings.
