“Splice Main Brace” Order to Ships’ Crews
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 5. The entire crews of 11 ships on the New Zealand coast should have been very happy men yesterdayBecause 13,000 miles away in London the flagship of their fleet, the new liner Port Brisbane, had been honoured by a visit from Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret an order was sent by cable message from London that every ship belonging to the company in New Zealand waters should “splice the main brace” in accordance with a long-standing naval tradition which states that each man of the fleet shall be issued with a tot of rum when Royalty visits one of the fleet. The crews of 11 Port Line ships were, accordingly, issued with their measure of rum.
Built for the New Zealand and Australian trade, the radically streamlined Port Brisbane is at present loading in London for her maiden voyage to Australia.
The Queen and Princess Margaret spent three hours aboard the vessel, according to cable messages received by the Wellington office of the com* pany.
The Port Brisbane may visit New Zealand on her next voyage from the United Kingdom.
