U.S. SECRETARY OF DEFENCE RESIGNS

Washington, March 3,

The Secretary of Defence, Mr. James Forrestal, has resigned, President Truman announced today. His successor will be Mr. Louis Arthur‘Johnson.

Mr. Forrestal’s resignation will be effective on March 31. President Truman denied the reports of other Cabinet changes and said the Army Secretary. Mr. Kenneth Royall, Air Secretary, Mr. Stuart Symington

and the Navy Secretary, Mr. John Sullivan would continue in their present POSIS. President Truman said the resignation had been accepted at Mr. Forrestal's request.

Mr. Forrestal had been trying to resign for over one year, Mr. Johnson was assistant Secretary for War under President Franklin Roosevelt. During the recent election, Mr. Johnson served as chairman for the finance committee for the Democratic National Committee.
