SURF CARNIVAL NEXT WEEK-END: CUP COMPETITION
The first surf carnival in which local life-saving teams will be competing against teams from other districts will be held on Waikanae Beach on Sunday March 13. commencing at 2 p.m.
Seven teams are expected to take part, the main attraction being the rescue and resuscitation event for the Bay of Plenty Cup. held by the Wainui Surf Club since 1939, when it won it at Ohope Beach. The cup has not been competed for since that date, although previously it was an annual event. Teams from Waihi. Whakatane, and Tauranga are expected to compete against" members of the Wainui and Gisborne Surf Clubs. One team will be composed of women. Some of the teams competing have just returned from the New Zealand surf championships and arc expected to be in excellent form.
A march past of the teams will open the carnival, after which the rescue and resuscitation event for the Bay ot Plenty Cup will be held. Surf ski races and relays and team surf races will round off the programme.
Arrangements for the carnival by members of the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club are well in train. To help defray expenses a collection is to be taken up during the afternoon.
