(P.A.) WANGANUI. Mar. 5. The preliminary heats of the 500 metres sprint and 4000 metres individual pursuit in New Zealand amateur hard track cycling championships were held on Cook’s Gardens yesterday in ideal weather. Results:
500 Metres Sprint Championship (present holder, A. W. Stonex). —First Round: S. Lcong (Waikato) beat G. W. Hawkins (Otago-Southland), time 13.8 sees; E. L. G. Hughes (Auckland) beat W. Mortlock (Hawke's Bay), time, 13.5 sees; J. Rogerson (Waikato) beat G. S. Schmeltz (Otago-Southland), time, 14.7 secs; A. W. Stonex (Auckland) beat S. L. Howes (Wellington), time, 13.6 secs; R. Harris (Canterbury) beat G. Mearns (WaikatoL time, 14.1 secs; M. Graham (Auckland) beat L. Lock (Canterbury), time, 14.6 secs; F. Clinton (West Coast) beat ,1. Higgins (Waikato), time, 13.4 secs; P. Coker (Auckland) beat A. L. Turner (Otago), time, 13.1 secs; P. Murray (Wellington) beat H. Pidwell (West Coast), time, 13.7 secs; R. Ilessey (West Coast) beat J. Williams (Hawke’s Bay), time. 13.9 secs. Owing to the withdrawal of N. Carter and W. Williams, both of Wellington, G. Wakcley (West Coast) and M. L. Stewart (Auckland) drew byes. Rcpechargo heats: Williams 1, Pidwell 2, Mortlock 3. Time, 14.3 secs: Turner 1, Higgins 2, time, 13.2 secs: Hawkins 1, Mearns 2, time, 13.8 secs; Lock 1, Schmelz 2, time. 13.9 secs. Williams. Turner, Hawkins and Lock qualify for the second round.
