NEW CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF: BRIG. STEWART

(P A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. Brigadier K. L. Stewart has been appointed Chief of the General Staff, in succession to Major-General Sir Norman Weir, whose retirement on completing the tenure of his appointment * takes effect as from March 31.

In announcing this today, the Minister of Defence, Mr. F. Jones, expressed his own personal appreciation and that of the Cabinet and the Government of General Weir’s lifetime of loyal and distinguished service. General Weir was the first Regular Force officer to graduate from the Royal Military College, Duntroon. and eventually became Chief of the General Staff in New Zealand.

Upon Brigadier Stewart’s promotion his place as Adjutant-General would be taken by Brigadier W. G. Gentry, who recently returned to New Zealand after attending a course at the Imperial Defence College in the United Kingdom.
