Christchurch's Heat Falls Below 90 Deg.: Beaches Thronged
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 10. For the first time since Saturday a temperature of less than 90 degrees was recorded in Christchurch yesterday. The maximum temperature recorded at the ' meteorological observatory shortly after noon was 86.3 degrees, but temperatures in country districts were still high and recordings to 100 degrees were made in inland parts of the province. A light sea breeze in Christchurch reduced the temperature in the afternoon. The humidity, though not high, was higher than it has been. In an effort to cool the streets Christchurch City Council trucks sprinkled water about midday, but the water soon evaporated.
Thousands again thronged the beaches last evening and during the day. Several large firms closed down for an hour to allow their employees time to have a:‘bathe.
Wheat is now coming in quickly, but according to the wheat controller, Mr. R. McPherson, it is in excellent condition. Tomatoes and stone fruit are ripening quickly. The extreme danger of fires was emphasised by the State Forest Service and rural fire officers, but no serious fires had been reported in the country.
