POPE’S LETTER OF PROTEST TO BISHOPS

(11 a.m.) VATICAN CITY. Feb. 9. A letter from Pope Pius XII to the Hungarian Bench of Bishops condemning the arrest of Cardinal Mindszenty was made public by the Vatican today. The letter, dated January 2—eight days after the Cardinal was arrested and before his trial—exhorted the Hungarian Catholics to show courage. The letter said: “Tire news that our beloved son, Cardinal Mindszenty, has been arrested is a serious offence against the sacred respect due to religion and human dignity. Therefore, conscience and duty impel us to express publicly sorrow and lament at what has been perpetrated against the rights of the church and to protest solemnly.” The Pope will address a "secret and extraordinary consistory” in the Vatican on Monday, when it is understood he will speak about the trial of Cardinal Mindszenty.
