SUCCESS FOLLOWS FOUR MINOR PLACINGS

(Herald Special Service.) Rhodesian Gold’s success in the No. 2 maiden event at Makaraka was due as this Rhodes Scholar three-year-old had weighed in on each of four previous starts. Her racing condition allowed her to outstay the Gisborne-owned-and-trained two-year-old, Jolly Sailor. The latter does not bear the lusty appearance he did earlier in the season. He is growing and may do better later and being a Tiderace will, perhaps, prefer an easier track. Autograph, favourite in Rhodesian Gold's race, was third and is not racing up to expectations. Of those beaten out of a place Grand Dame did best of an inexperienced lot.
