IN TROUBLE FOR DECADE

NEW YORK, Nov. 14,

Barrel-chested John la Porte Given, jun., found himself riding in the patrol wagon again this week. Given, once one of Cafe Society’s most eligible bachelors, is now the husband of Irene Heinz, heiress to her father's 23,000,000 dollars pickle fortune.

Scion of a distinguished old Southern family, graduate of the Georgia University, Given has been getting into trouble for more than a decade.

In 1935 he was arrested for walking down Fifth Avenue toting two 45-cali-bre guns, and threatening to wage war on "clip joints.” At the police station, Given explained that he had been “gypped” on a visit to a “gin mill’ the night before, and did not want to see it happen to anyone v else.

He was released when he proved he was an enthusiastic rifleman, and had a permit for sixteen assorted firearms, and had once won a trophy from ths United States Revolver Association. In 1939 Given accused a brunette companion of tossing a plateful of salad at him, breaking his favourite tooth. Counter-Charge

The brunette countered with a charge that he had kicked her so hard under the table that the salad plate "just flew” at him.” In 1939 also he was accused by model Mary Buckley of "brutally and wantonly” assaulting her in a hotel suite. In 1940, an attractive nurse, Marguerite Fuller, accused Given of forcibly kissing and embracing her. Later. Given beat up a man in a swank cafe, and claimed he was protecting his pretty companion. Last year, sensational charges were filed by model Phyllis Lane, who told the court that Given dangled her by the heels from an hotel window, and let her drop two stories to the terrace below.

Charges in all these cases were either dismissed or settled by Given's lawyers out of court. He is now held, with 100 dollars bail, for assaulting an elderly negro with a sword cane. The 41-year-old member of America’s Social Register listed his profession as "retired,” when he signed police documents after his arrest.

“Retired from what?” asked reporters. "That,” drawled Southerner Given, “is an embarrassing question.’’
