Fall From Motor Cycle.

When he fell from his motor-cycle yesterday Mr Thomas Holmes Spencer, Muriwai, suffered injuries which necessitated his removal to the Cook Hospital. He was reported this morning to have spent a good night and to be comfortable.

Support for Common Petrol Price

Wanganui motorists pay Id a_ gallon more for petrol than motorists in Palmerston North and New Plymouth. Taupo motorists pay 3d a gallon more than Wanganui motorists. These differences were noted by members of the Automobile Association (Wanganui) when a request was received from the Wellington association for an opinion on the desirability of a common price for petrol. Members expressed the view that transportation costs should be distributed evenly as in the case of merchandise. The meeting unanimously favoured a common price for petrol. Women Without Hats

A woman who appeared in the witness box without a hat attracted comment from Mr. Justice Christie during the hearing of an undefended divorce petition at Auckland. Asking if it was customary for wome nto appear in the Supreme Court without hats. His Honour said he had not experienced it before without making comment. Counsel in the case, Mr. Townshend, said it seemed to be customary in modern times. He had not previously heard an objection to it. “Very well,” said His Honour. Early Gisborne Pictures The Gisborne branch of the Old Folks’ Association hopes to exhibit about 2000 prints of early Gisborne photographs, in a display commencing tomorrow and continuing for two days in marquees erected on the site of the association’s projected building in Bright street. Personalities of the infant settlement, panoramas of the town at vai'ious stages of its growth, and a number of prints associated with the troubled times when Te Kooti was at large are included in the collection already made on behalf of the association. Also included will be pictures and descriptions of early wrecks on the coast near Gisbonxe, and a valuable collection of copies of early newspaper issues Visit to Settlement Blocks

The Minister of Rehabilitation and Lands, Mr. C. F. Skinner, today visited the Ngatapa district to meet servicemen settlers on the Hihiroroa and Hiwinui (formerly Taumata) settlement blocks. These properties, taken over by the Crown early in 1947. have been under occupation ‘by working staffs of returned men in the meantime, and those who have prospects of remaining permanently on the blocks as settlers had representations to make to the Minister on his present visit to the district, relative to the conditions of their employment and the prospect of final settlement. Mr. Skinner has arranged to meet the Gisborne ' district rehabilitation committee this evening, and also to hear representations from the executive of the Gisborne Returned Services’ Association.
