COASTAL VESSEL RANNAH SOON TO VISIT GISBORNE

A new coastal vessel in New Zealand waters, the Richardson Company’s motor vessel, Rannah, which arrived at Wellington from Sydney on November 26, after a rough passage of nine days, is expected at Gisborne sometime next month.

Of 301 tons gross, the Rannah, which may be renamed, is a wooden ship, built in Tasmania in 1944 for the Australian Supply Board. She is 124 ft. long, with a 24ft. 3in. beam and draws lift. 4in. Powered by twin-screw Gardiner four-stroke engines driving the propellers through three-to-one Sonnidale reduction gear, the vessel has a speed of 8.5 knots.

She was purchased by the company for carrying frozen meat from secondary to main ports. Gisborne and Tokomaru Bay will be two of the ports *at which the vessel will call regularly to load meat for transhipment to overseas liners at Napier. She will also carry meat from Nelson and Picton to Wellington. Captain A. McLachlan commanded the Rannah on her voyage from Australia, while other executive officers were Mr. J. Dracup, first mate; Mr. A. Hateley, second mate; Mr. J. S. Caskie, chief engineer; Mr. R, Parker, second engineer; and Mr. S. Gundie, sleward-in-charge.
