SOUTH AFRICA ALL OUT FOR 161 RUNS IN FIRST TEST

(11 a.m.) DURBAN. Dec. 16. The English bowlers performed very well to dismiss South Africa for 161 in the first test match which began today on a perfect wicket. With rain clouds gathering and the light failing the M.C.C. bowlers won a race against the weather to end the South African innings. Play was abandoned for the day after England had scored one run. Hostile bowling and alert fielding had the South Africans struggling for runs throughout. Three of South Africa’s best batsmen were out for 74 at lunch and after the interval the medium pacers, Gladwin and Bcdser completed the rout, taking the last five wickets for 13 runs in 20 minutes.

Bedser. who took four for 39, bowled to a plan, pitching an inswinger on the middle stump and forcing the batsmen to play it into the short-leg fieldsmen’s hands.
