N.Z. WOOLLEN MILLS’ BUYINGS LIGHT AT CHRISTCHURCH

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17 Commenting on a statement of the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, about the high prices at the Christchurch wool sale on Wednesday Mr. W. R. Carey, president of the New Zealand Woollen Mill Owners’ Association, said that Mr. Holland had inferred that the mills set the price for the sales.

“This,” said Mr. Carey, “is entirely wrong. As a matter of fact the mills took a much smaller proportion of wool from the sale on Wednesday than it is their custom to do for the first Christchurch sale.”

A statement of the purchases made at the first Christchurch wopl sale issued by the Overseas Shipping Allocation Committee, shows that purchases by local mills were 4594 bales plus 182 for a southern mill, out of a total sale of 30.094 bales. One buyer for overseas bought 8311 bales and another 3144.
