GARDENING CIRCLE MEMBERS REVIEW YEAR OF PROGRESS

The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle was held last week, Mrs. R. P. Baigcnt presiding over a good attendance. At the opening of the meeting members stood in silence in tribute to the memory of Mrs. A. Stoneham, whose death occurred recently and in sympathy with the bereaved relatives. On behalf of members, Mrs. W. H. James presented Mrs. Baigent with a sheaf of gladioli and roses and expressed" appreciation of her work during the year for the circle. Miss M. Walton, secretary, and Mrs. Gresham, treasurer, also received pretty bouquets. The stewards, Mcsdarnes S. Richardson and Owen, received shoulder sprays, as did also Mesdames F. Williams and Wickcns. for acting as tea hostesses. For her long service to the circle, Mrs. Johnstone was made a life member and was presented with a spray. In her annual report, Mrs. Baigent stated that; CO active members were enrolled with the circle and 16 were on the waiting list. Cut (lower and decorative work competitions had been held at each meeting, and a high standard had been maintained. Communist Service.

As in previous years, the circle carried out the decorating of the hall lor Pioneers’ Day, and made the wreaths for Anzac Day. On two occasions, members decorated the Opera House and made the presentation bouquets for visiting artists at the Diggers' Choir concerts. At the A and P. Show in April the circle entered a display of flowers, for which first prize was gained and at the Horticultural Society’s gladioli show on December 7 the circle was responsible for staging a miniature garden in the centre of the hall.

Donations were made to the Leper Society, New Zealand Red Cross Society, Flood Relief Committee, United Nations appeal and St. John Ambulance and at regular intervals large parcels of foodstuffs were sent by the circle to a ward in an English hospital. Thanks were due to a long list of helpers, including speakers at monthly meetings, the press, office bearers, judges, Mr. Lowe and all who cooperated in the activities of the circle, concluded the report.
