WAINUI WATER SUPPLY FINANCE: SETTLERS’ SCHEME

A proposal that the county authority, or alternatively the municipal authority. should finance the extension of a water supply pipeline to Wainui, and defrav the cost from rates, was submitted to tre Cook County Council yes. terday by the Wanui Settlers’ Association.

When the question of a water-supply for Wainui was first raised it was considered that the only means of furnishing this facility would be by securing an extension of the borough supplylines from Tyndall road, Kaiti; and that to provide the necessary flow of water it would be essential to increase the capacity of the borough lines to that point. This proposal had been referred to the Wainui Settlers’ Association by the County Council, with an inquiry "as to whether the settlers were prepared to meet the cost of enlarging the pipeline which will be installed when the borough reticulates the outer Kaiti area for water. The letter received at yesterday’s meeting of the council comprised the association’s reply to this suggestion. When the matter came before yesterday’s meeting the acting-chairman, Mr. R. C. Murphy, commented that he could not see the council expending a large sum to provide a water supply for the Wainui settlement. The settlers in that area should either raise a loan or establish a special rating area, he thought. Mr. L. C. C. Field suggested that the matter be referred to the Gisborne Borough Council, in order that the desire of the Wainui settlement for water reticulation should not be lost sight of, when the outer Kaiti area is being reticulated. It would be an expensive matter, he pointed out, to enlarge any main once it was laid.

The council agreed to take this course, deferring discussion of the obvious questions which would be raised by the municipal authority. It was agreed that the Wainui supply should be kept in view by the two district authorities concerned.
