SHOW GROUNDS A QUAGMIRE: GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 15. Several veteran show supporters declare that never before had the Invercargill Showgrounds been subjected to such a deluge as experienced yesterday for the opening of the Royal Show.

Boisterous weather with a strong wind and frequent heavy showers perssited throughout the clay and not only made the grounds a quagmire with the constant movement of stock and traffic, but interfered with the progress of judging the cattle and pig sections and and other events.

However, officials and exhibitors set to manfully and carried out their allotte dtas’ks with the minimum of delay with a result that the first day's programme was completed without serious interruption.

The heaw wind and rain continued throughout 'the night, with the result that the prospects of ail improvement for People’s Day today with the official opening bv the Minister of Agriculture, Mr." E. L. Cullen, and the grand parade of stock as the highlights are very slight.

Judging in the horse sections, m which entries are drawn from many districts, started at an early hour and will continue throughout the oay. The unfavourable weather is likely to affect the attendance of the public this afternoon when there is a general halfholiday in the city and will cause a serious drop in the takings.

Last night’s entertainment programme was cancelled on account of the weather and unless there is a sudden improvement, tonight's programme may also have to be postponed. The weather is a great disappointment for the organisers, exhibitors and visitors from other parts who naturally expected to see a wonderful display of stock in ideal surroundings.
