GIFT OF TRAVELLING RUGS TO ROYALTY

(PA) WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. Three travelling rugs which the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, presented to the King and Queen and Princess Margaret at Buckingham Palace on Monday are believed by their Dunedin manufacturers to be the finest of their kind ever produced in New Zealand, the acting-Prime Minister, Mr. W. Nash, stated today. The rugs were ordered by the New Zealand Government early this year and were- to have been given to Then ‘ Majesties before the Royal tour. Owing to the postponement of the tour they were flown expressly to the United Kingdom in under a week by arrangement with Tasman Empire Airways and Qantas Airways. . A suggestion that the rugs be in the Royal tartan was made by the manufacturers concerned, and, when approached, the King chose the hunting Stewart tartan. The finest Merino wool procurable was used and metriculous attention was paid to the colour matching effect. Each New Zealand coat-of-arms took a week to embroider.
