France’s First Atomic Pile Now Operating
(11 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 15. It is officially announced that France’s first atomic pile began to operate this morning at the Paris suburb of Fort de Chatillon. The news was sent to the Prime Minister, M. Queuille. by Dr. JolietCurie, French High Commissioner for Atomic Energy, who is a Communist, and M. Raoul D'Autry, AdministratorGeneral.
The pile was built mainly as a trial apparatus aimed at training technicians and in solving problems involved in the construction of piles of greater power.
NEW ATOM BOMB TESTS PENDING?
(11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 15. The Atomic Energy Commission spokesman said today that “the danger area” surrounding Eniwetok atoll in the Pacific will continue indefinitely. The United Press interprets this to mean that the authorities are planning new atom bomb tests.
