CHIANG URGED TO SURRENDER PRESIDENCY
(11 a.m.) NANKING, Dec. 15. General Chlang Kai-shek is today studying the recommendations of his closest advisers that he surrender control of China’s faltering Government and withdraw temporarily, says the Associated Press correspondent. As yet, despite tremendous pressure, the Generalissimo has shown no indication that he will do so. It is learned reliably that General Chiang’s closest associates suggested to him directly that the only salvation for Nationalist China was for him to step down and let others salvage the remnants, probably through negotiation, with the Communists. The advisers’ suggestion to General Chiang was that he should remain available for return to leadership il needed at some future time. The Vice-President, Mr. Li Tsung Jen, according to the associates, is willing to assume leadership of the Government, but only if the transfer is made in a constitutional manner. They said they are certain the result of such a change would be an immediate step towards halting the hostilities and opening negotiations with the Communists.
