BIG UNION’S DRIVE TO OUST COMMUNISTS
(10.20 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 14. The Chemical Workers’ Union, with 22,000 members, has launched the most dramatic drive against alleged Communists in its ranks ever undertaken by a British trade union. Conflicting forces in the union have struggled for supremacy for some months and the dispute has already reached the Courts. A new phase opened yesterday when a conference of 57 delegates claiming to represent 16,000 union members elected a new national executive including the president and vice-presi-dent. After the conference the general secretary, Mr. R. Edwards, commented: “Not a single Communuist has been elected to the new executive. This is a clean sweep.” Those voted from office assert that they are not Communists and refuse to recognise yesterday’s decisions.
