AMERICANS PLAN LARGE PASSENGER LINER

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1. The construction of America’s lax-gest passenger liner will begin next year and will be completed about 1952. Yet unnamed, the liner will he of_ 48,000 tons and will have a speed of 28.5 knots. It will cost at least 67,350,000 dollars, which was the lowest tender received today. The United States Government is expected to contribute about 30,000,000 dollars of the cost. The liner will be operated by the United States Line in the trans-Atlantic service, with accommodation for 2000 passengers. As a troop transport it could carry 12,000 men and their equipment. The largest American liner at present is the America, of 26,454 tons, with accommodation for 1219 passengers. The New York Times says: “The new vessel will far exceed the normal size of the 48,000-tonner because of the use of lighter metals, and its speed will be far greater than 28.5 knots, the cruising speed specified in the contract.”
